The same has happened in my mum's garden and the self-seeded sunflowers are magnificent- 7-8ft high.

As plants the self-seeded sunflowers seem far stronger, more healthy and have increased resilience to pests such as slugs. Think my days of carefully nurturing sunflowers in pots may be over. Next year I'm just spreading sunflower bird seed on the ground and letting nature do the rest. :-)
